This 18th-century house is located in the historic town of Richmond on the banks of the River Thames. Luxury Gardens worked closely with the clients to design and develop a beautiful Italian courtyard garden design that captures the house's beauty and location.

Our Italian Courtyard Garden in Richmond, London, was designed in the Autumn of 2023. Construction started in early 2024 and was completed by early March. Since then, we have nurtured, managed, and looked after the garden regularly.

Our clients love their beautiful oasis on the banks of the Thames. Being south-facing, we exploited this with rich and fragrant Mediterranean-style planting. In October 2024, we planted over 200 bulbs for a dazzling display of Spring 2025.

authentic materials

When designing this Italian Courtyard Garden, it was important for us to reflect the essence of the house and the garden's theme. The garden is drawn together with York stone and clay pavers, using reclaimed features such as a stone turret from the original house, Italian olive jars, and a classical white stone sculpture.

new random york stone

York stone is a sandstone originating from the Yorkshire. It was used in Victorian London for pavements and floors and is renowned for its durability and natural beauty. York stone is often used in restoration projects or where authenticity is needed in a garden. For our Italian Courtyard Garden, we chose a new random York stone.

Cottage clay pavers create a contrast with the York stone, enhancing the garden's ambience. We designed the Italian Courtyard Garden with red pavers to accentuate the Olive Jar and Statue. They were also used for edging and the low walls. Plants cascade over the edges of the brick, further softening the garden's overall appearance.

Carex Comans

Carex comans 'Frosted Curls' is an ornamental grass known for its soft foliage. The leaves are edged with creamy white, creating a frosted appearance that catches the light beautifully. This hardy perennial thrives in various conditions, from full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for borders and softening hard edges, such as brick or paving.

Honeysuckle Lonicera Japonica Halliana fragrant semi-evergreen climber

Honeysuckle Halliana

Honeysuckle Halliana is a semi-evergreen climber with highly fragrant white to yellow flowers from April to August. This stunning climber will cover walls or arches where the fragrance evokes the senses and attracts butterflies and bees. The lush, green foliage provides a beautiful backdrop throughout the growing season.

Cistus Purpureus

Cistus purpureus from the Mediterranean is a fragrant evergreen shrub with a profusion of purple flowers from late spring through mid-summer. Cistus are known for their aromatic leaves, which are often used in perfumes. The plant has narrow, evergreen leaves, which are fragrant when crushed. Attracts an abundance of bees and butterflies.

English Lavender

English Lavender, or Lavandula Hidcote, is a beautiful, compact evergreen shrub. Renowned for its vibrant purple-blue flowers, it typically flowers throughout the summer with proper care. Its strong fragrance is the perfect addition to any garden, attracting bees and butterflies. The aromatic foliage is grey-green, providing a beautiful contrast to the flowers.
